About Me!

(Stacey and I before baby)

My name is Joanne Ilaqua (Ill-ah-kwa) and I am a Registered Practical Nurse and a Doula. I have been registered with the College of Nurses since 2001 and my nursing experience has been primarily in pre and post surgical care. I began my journey into the doula world in 2006, and I am hooked! I did my training with Doulas of North America (DONA).

I have 4 kids ranging in age from 2 years to 15 years old. My personal birthing experiences vary; from medication-free to cesarean, yet, I recognize that my birth experiences are irrelevant to yours, except for the experience I gained from them.

My nursing experience provides me with the ability to work within a patient-focused environment. I consider myself part of a team during childbirth... a team member with a focus on the mother's emotional and physical well-being.  Although I understand that childbirth is a natural process and should be treated as such whenever possible, I am quite comfortable working within a hospital setting.

I have breastfed 4 children, and some were easier than others. I have learned that it is imperative to get help and guidance as soon as possible to ensure success. I want to help women feel the empowerment of breastfeeding whenever possible. Therefore, I continue to take courses and educate myself. Women are often amazed at how difficult breastfeeding can be and how much dedication takes. They are equally amazed at the feeling of accomplishment and pride they get when it all works!

The most important thing that you need to know about me is that I am dedicated to helping women and families achieve a satisfying birth and postpartum experience.
