Myths and Truths about Doulas

Only with trust, faith, and support can the woman allow the birth experience to enlighten and empower her.

Myth #1: Doulas are only useful for a non-medicated or home birth.

Truth: Doulas provide informed support and guidance throughout labour which is just as useful to a woman having a medicated hospital birth as it is to a non-medicated homebirth.

Myth #2: A Doula will "take over" my birth and make my partner feel useless.

Truth: The role of a Doula is to allow the partner to be involved at a level that is comfortable to them.  Some partners want to be more involved in all aspects of the birth, some less. A Doula provides a constant level of support, as needed.

Myth #3: A Doula will judge me if I choose to use medical interventions during my birth.

Truth: Doulas provide non-judgemental support. Because we are experienced in childbirth, we know that every birth is different. We will provide emotional support if interventions are necessary and informed support if interventions are desired by the mom.

Myth #4: It will be a waste of money if I hire a Doula and end up having a cesarean

Truth: Doulas offer a tremendous amount of support during and after a cesarean. It is major abdominal surgery and it can be very frightening. The postpartum recovery is more painful, thus often resulting in  breastfeeding difficulties. If you have a cesarean delivery planned, consider a postpartum doula.

Myth #5: Hiring a Postpartum Doula is just like hiring a nanny

Truth: A Postpartum Doula provides guidance and support to the family for up to 6 weeks postpartum. She will provide breastfeeding support, assist with newborn care and do light housekeeping as needed. A good Doula works herself out of a job... therefore, you won't need her past 6 weeks postpartum.

Myth #6: Doulas all wear socks and Birkenstocks and burn incense

Truth: I can assure you that I have never worn socks and sandals together and I really don't like the smell of incense!
